Cybercrime and information security are growing transnational phenomena. Recently, severe security breaches, ID thefts, digital frauds, online drug-trafficking, and online dating violence have raised public concerns that technology facilitates cybercrime and victimization.
Driven by the need to ensure the security of very sensitive data in today’s government organizations and business enterprises, the demand for cybersecurity experts (network security analysts and cybersecurity investigators) has increased by 74 percent during the six years from 2007 to 2013 (according to labor market consultants Burning Glass Technologies).
Ideal for law enforcement officers, computer science-related personnel, and others who wish to enhance their expertise in cybercrime investigation and cybersecurity techniques, the Master of Science in Criminal Justice concentration in Cybercrime Investigation & Cybersecurity (CIC) offers an interdisciplinary approach that combines criminal justice and cybersecurity. Taught by faculty from the Boston University Metropolitan College departments of Applied Social Sciences and Computer Science, the curriculum ensures that students develop competence and practical knowledge, enabling them to work with various issues related to cybercrime. By participating in the program, students will gain insight into cyber-criminology and the legal practices, practical digital investigative knowledge, and policies related to cybersecurity risk assessment. In addition, students who successfully complete the concentration are eligible to take the forensic examiner exams.
Metropolitan College also offers technical programs in security housed in the Department of Computer Science:
Thomas Jovanovich MS in Criminal Justice (MET’18) Education Specialist, Federal Bureau of Prisons
"I chose MET because of the flexibility of the program. Working full-time and being a single father, flexibility was crucial. I also chose the program because of the prestige of Boston University."
Vanessa Burns MS in Criminal Justice, Concentration in Strategic Management (MET’22) Parole Officer, Massachusetts Parole Board
"I love that this program brings together people from different places, professions, and points in their lives and provides us with a blueprint for mending our flawed system."
